Summary
-
The Steam Awards have taken place once again and once again people are very upset.
-
Black Myth: Wukong's win for Best Story causes confusion, as does Red Dead Redemption's win for Best Soundtrack.
-
Also causing a stir were Silent Hill 2, beating out Nine Sols and Metaphor for best art style, and Elden Ring, beating Stardew Valley and No Man's Sky for Labor of Love.
The Steam Awards recently ended and they once again ensured that everyone who was upset at the Game Awards last year can appreciate the show, as commercialized and predictable as it has become in recent years. That's because almost every single entry has someone upset about it, although two particular winners attract more anger than others.
Black Myth: Wukong performed quite well and received a total of three awards. It won the Game of the Year award as well as the Best Game You Suck At award, two categories in which it was almost certain to walk away since Black Myth: Wukong had won several other gamer-voted Game of the Year awards in the Past and Player's Choice at The Game Awards.
Black Myth: Wukong's Steam Award for Best Story stunned everyone
It also managed to pick up the Outstanding Story-Rich Game award, although that award raises a lot more eyebrows. It managed to beat games like Mouthwash, Ghost of Tsushima and Final Fantasy 16, despite having a story that many would describe as pretty non-existent. Twitter users like Network_Synth even mention that they haven't heard a single person talk about the story of Black Myth: Wukong.
Another Twitter user named KeyToAeris also expressed his disappointment with the Steam Awards: both Black Myth: Wukong won the award for Best Story and Red Dead Redemption won the award for Best Soundtrack, which included games like Silent Hill 2 and could beat Horizon Forbidden West. In this particular tweet we also see a lot more angry people.
A user named VeryClumsyMage is upset that Elden Ring won the Labor of Love Award, beating out No Man's Sky and Stardew Valley, and Liar's Bar won the award for most innovative gameplay ahead of Balatro and Helldivers 2. Others are upset about Silent Hill 2 winning for Outstanding Visual Style ahead of Nine Sols and Metaphor: ReFantazio. It's really a bit chaotic.
This is of course the result of player voting, because it's quite obvious that people are choosing their favorites and not games that deserve special awards. The Steam Awards have always been a bit of a joke in this regard, with last year's awards being hijacked by salty Red Dead Redemption 2 fans who called the game Labor of Love a joke. Unfortunately it won't be taken seriously without moderation, so we'll see you this time next year for Outcry 2025.
