The wild world of 4Kids Dubs
Watered down anime
A main goal of 4kids and their infamous dubs, especially back then, was to tone down the intensity of animeto better appeal to foreign audiences. The Shadow Realm is a brilliant concept
Censoring death without removing the stakes
In many ways, the censorship in the 4Kids dubs is a disadvantage. Howeverin a sense it also creates a wholenew,Andstrangely entertaining, the concept is a far cry from the original source material, and what's more, it's a hilarious example of censorship in anime. The best example of this idea is withYu-Gi-Oh!and the concept of the Shadow Realm. In the original series of Yu-Gi-Oh!Many of the duels that would result in a character's death or serious injury would then be replaced by the idea of the Shadow Realm. For example, in the original duel between Yugi and Kaiba against Lumis and Umbra, the loser's glass floor would shatter beneath him and he would fall to his death. In the 4Kids dub, the loser would not die but would fall into a portal that transports him to the Shadow Realm.
