After years of endless rumors and speculation, the Switch 2 was finally confirmed in the best Nintendo style with a random tweet on a Tuesday morning. In this incredibly understated post, Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that the announcement would be made later in the fiscal year, which ends in March this year, meaning the new console will be revealed any day now.

The upcoming console was unveiled at CES 2025 before Nintendo had the chance.
The first Switch was announced with a special trailer in October 2016, almost nine years ago. We were shown the hybrid nature of the console, gameplay from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (which was exclusive to Wii U at the time), detachable Joy-Cons, and third-party titles like Skyrim that run effortlessly on the system – a huge success A masterpiece for a handheld console at the time.
This was a far more eventful reveal than a tweet, but as the BBC reported at the time, it was a presentation eight years ago today in Tokyo where Nintendo would finally reveal its price, release date, specs and launch lineup.
Almost a decade ago, Nintendo revealed everything
In this hour-long comprehensive review of the Nintendo Switch, we learned how the Joy-Cons worked – that they could not only be detached but combined into a controller when the console was docked – and how long the battery would last.
Nintendo also revealed the many first-party titles the console would launch with, including Breath of the Wild, 1-2 Switch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey and, who could forget , arms and snipper clips. The real highlight, however, was the March 3rd release date, which was imminent at that point.
As Vice reports, leaker Average Lucia Fanatic claims that the Switch 2 will finally be revealed this Friday, and also reveals the March 3rd release date, which is once again imminent. Supposedly we can also expect a new Mario Kart and 3D Mario game, as well as a Red Dead Redemption 2 port.
If true, it sounds like Nintendo is preparing for a similar reveal to its Tokyo livestream from eight years ago, albeit more condensed and in line with the newer Direct format.
As with any leak, caution is advised here, but at least the wait is coming to an end. Even though it won't be revealed this week, the fiscal year is almost over, meaning the Switch 2 will be revealed within the next two months, almost ten years after its predecessor.
