The Switch successor was officially announced on January 16th with a two and a half minute trailer. Nintendo's next console is larger, rounder and overall looks slimmer than its predecessor. The Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart game appears to offer a major improvement

The newly confirmed Mario Kart game for the Nintendo Switch 2 appears to be a major improvement over its predecessor.

The January 16 announcement trailer confirmed the presence of the additional button on the upcoming console. While previous Switch 2 leaks detailed the shape and location of the new key, the original isn't actually marked with a “C.” Instead, the square button seems almost completely non-functional. Since the sources attesting to the presence of the letter “C” were otherwise correct regarding other aspects of the Switch 2, it is plausible that the console's prototypes did in fact have a C button, but Nintendo opted for it before announcing it decided to abolish this label.

A Nintendo Switch 2 leak correctly predicted the absence of “C” on the new button

The only source that can accurately predict what the new button will look like is OnLeaks, which released accurate 360-degree renders of the Switch 2 a week before the console's official announcement. However, even this well-known consumer electronics leaker had no information about the purpose of the button next to the Home button.

Even if the button's strange design offers no clues as to its function, it's possible that someone has already figured it out. A dataminer who examined the latest version of the Switch operating system recently suggested that the additional button is used for chat functions. This theory is based on some references to “Campus” discovered in Nintendo's latest firmware. Campus is intended to be a feature that includes both voice and group chats for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. This discovery led to the possibility that the alleged C key on the Switch 2 prototypes stood for “chat.”

More information about the mysterious button is expected to be revealed no later than April 2025. A Switch 2-focused Nintendo Direct is scheduled for April 2nd, followed by a series of hands-on preview events that Nintendo will host around the world, giving fans the opportunity to try out the upcoming device early. Since this tour will last until early June 2025, this is the earliest expected release of the Switch 2.
