The Best Third-Person Survival Horror Games

Your resources are low, but the terror is never-ending in these third-person survival horror games.

The paranoia of having to rely on someone else to help when it hits the fan can make for exciting and frightening moments and a lot of great multiplayer horror games have caught on to this. There is a plethora of them out there and each one can send shivers down your spine and screams throughout your house. Even though it can often be difficult to find the gold within the huge piles of copy-paste clones, there are some brilliant ones worth checking out. So with that in mind here are some of the best horror games out there to play with friends.

Updated March 6, 2025 By Matthew Mckeown: Horror games on your own are a fine enough experience, though they can be a bit predictable and full of startling jump-scares. With friends though that whole dynamic changes as group paranoia sets in and people start screaming.

A lot of games absolutely nail the experience of being locked into a terrifying situation with other people, and the majority are by indie devs that really know what they’re doing. So if you’re itching to get that adrenaline going with your buds, then check out our updated look at the best horror games to play with friends.

Hired 2 Die

Everyone Is Expendable

Hired2Die: A skeleton creature chasing after one of the workmen.

If you’ve ever wanted to feel what it’s like to be completely expendable, then check out Hired 2 Die from Electric Monkeys. This unique multiplayer horror game that puts you in the role as a staffer from Intersection, a company that deals with anomalies, reality distortions and the supernatural.

Instead of hunting ghosts here, you’ll be repairing machines, completing simple or complex tasks on objects that have been ‘distorted’. There’s a lot of moving parts to figure out, and no two tasks or objectives are ever alike, so there’s a fair amount of prep-work required before each mission. If you’re a group that enjoys a game that requires a lot of communicating, then this is the one for you.

Underward

Breaking Into Labs With The Boys

Underward: A monstrous amalgamation of man and machine.

Grab a group of pals that you can rely on in a pinch, strap on your hazmat suit and get ready for a night of body horror with Underward from Intense. This multiplayer horror game pits you and your friends against a laboratory facility filled with mutant monsters and other horrible hazards.

Your goal, retrieve a test subject creature from a tube and extract it back to the elevator you came from. Sounds easy, but in practice it’s much harder. Every little noise draws attention from something big and horrible, and if you’re not careful you’ll end up as just another statistic. Underwards style is unique, and the hospital setting of the labs are really good at cranking up the tension. Highly recommended if you want a nice night of frights with friends.

The Headliners

Doing Anything For That Perfect Shot

The Headliners: Reporters running down the street from a giant creature destroying the city.

Cloverfield and Michigan: Report From Hell really cemented an interesting take on being trapped as a camera crew, or civilians in a setting where there’s a massive monster attacking. The Headliners from Kafi took notes from those, expanded upon them, and made a very fun game.

Here your group is playing as a local news team that’s been sent into New York after it becomes overrun with monsters. You’ll need to grab exciting footage as you explore around alleyways, ruined buildings and dangerous streets. Plus, any footage you grab will be fed into a fun newsreel at the end of each mission so you can make some interesting short film stuff.

Mistery

Dealing With Unfriendly Fog Creatures

Mistery: A gigantic aquatic creature isolated in a room.

A top-down multiplayer horror game, Mystery from Game Frontier drops you right into the realm of madness from the beginning in all the best ways. This surreal and spooky game sets you against a number of very dangerous SCP’s style creatures that have broken out of containment and need to be put back in again.

Each encounter with the creatures is random, and they can even infect or completely replace a member of your team in a John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing’ kind of style if you’re not careful. You’ll need to gather resources, keep a close eye on everyone, and make sure you get out alive at the end of the run. It’s a brilliant little adventure into the unknown and if you enjoy Containment Breach style games, then you’ll really get into Mistery.

All you can do is descend and grab whatever food you can find, but the further down you go, the deadlier it gets. A great game with some interesting resource management mechanics, Kletka comes highly recommended.

But those abyssal refuges are far from vacant. Monsters, mutants and worse prowl the halls in those deep dwellings and you better not leave empty handed as there’s a quota to fill. There’s some fun gimmicks and the art style is cutesy yet bathed in all sorts of unsettling atmosphere. If you like games that bring a lot of feelings of dread, then Sub Terror is worth checking out.

Whilst there are a lot of Lethal Company clones out there, this is perhaps the best iteration of them that you’re going to find.

Hellbreach: Vegas

Old School Zombie Shooter Vibes In Vegas

Hellbreach: Vegas - Undead with burnt skin approaching a soldier.

A solo dev project that’s just drowning in classic Call Of Duty Zombie energy, Hellbreach: Vegas from Infinity Ape Studio is worth putting on your radar. It’s got all the things that made the old school COD Zombie mode great, plus a few new things to keep it fresh.

Open up to four players, you find yourself in sunny Las Vegas but filled with an insurmountable number of demons and undead. There’s multiple modes including an endless Survivor and tighter focused Trapped challenge that puts you on a much smaller map. And generally it’s a brilliant and satisfyingly arcadey feeling zombie wave shooter. Modern COD Zombies may be missing the mark, but Hellbreach: Vegas definitely scratches that itch.

The Anomaly Project

Spot The Difference, Or Do It All Again

The Anomaly Project: Clowns creeping around in the dark museum.

If you’ve ever wanted to test your observation and memory skills with a group in a horror setting then The Anomaly Project from Kekdot needs to be in your Steam library. Guess right and you go to the next level, get it wrong and you start over. Up to eight can play at once, so you can bring a lot of back up as the anomalies can range from the obvious and glaring, to the subtle and hard to spot. There’s 10 zones in total to beat, but it’s not as easy as it sounds. Patience and paying attention are key to making your escape. A good time on your own, but very enjoyable with friends, grab The Anomaly Project whilst you can.

The mannequins can shapeshift into different models to ambush the hunters, but the Agents hot on their tail have some handy tech to spot their suspects amongst the statues. The goal is simple, the last team standing wins, so hold still and pick a pose.

The multiverse has been infested, but there’s money to be made lending out your extermination skills. There are multiple modes including a Spider Hunt versus and of course plenty of co-op carnage to create as your crew scours every surface for spiders.
