Take-Two is unconcerned about GTA 6 on Xbox Series S

Key insights

  • When Grand Theft Auto 6 releases next fall, don't expect the Xbox Series S to be skipped.

  • In Take-Two's recent conference call, CEO Strauss Zelnick reiterated the company's commitment to releasing the title on the platforms players are on.

  • Zelnick added that he's not “worried” about the game not running on a Series S, which should give Series S fans some hope.

This time next year we'll hopefully – seriously, we mean hopefully – all be playing Grand Theft Auto 6. Because despite the lack of a second trailer, Take-Two has confirmed that GTA 6 is still on track to release next fall. Like I said, hopefully.

When it actually releases, we know that Rockstar's latest entry in the legendary open-world franchise will certainly run on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. But what about the Series S, Microsoft's less powerful entry-level next-generation console?

Games need to be limited in scope and not reach such incredible proportions that they turn single-player games into ever-expanding live service worlds.

Well, there is no need to worry. But don't believe us, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick isn't worried about it.

The Series S will have GTA 6

During Take-Two's recent conference call, Zelnick was specifically asked about the Series S and its ability to run GTA 6, as it is a lower-spec console and GTA 6 will likely push any hardware to its limits. Here's what he had to say:

Yes. Look, we support the platforms that consumers are on while they are there, and we find a way to support platforms despite different levels of technology. Our labels are really good at this. I'm not really worried.

I never thought about where the hardware went. And I've said that many times over the years because, first of all, I don't worry about things that I have no control over. And secondly, because I believe in the audience. If you have great properties, the audience will show up and so we just need to make sure we are present on a range of platforms.

In other words, Rockstar will find a way to get GTA 6 running on the Series S, even in a potentially degraded state. He added: “So the bottom line is that we are selective about the platforms we support. We’ll make the technology work if we can make it work, as long as the audience is big enough to make it worthwhile.”

In fact, the Series S audience is large enough to make this effort worthwhile. A year ago, IGN reported that 74.8% of Xbox Series owners worldwide owned an S. That number has largely evened out, but there's still a sizable audience interested in the S and buying the console, so it's worth finding a way to make everything run as intended.
