This claim therefore suggests that the PS6 may be released as early as the end of 2027.
The PlayStation 6 could launch as early as the end of 2027, according to a new report from a well-known industry insider. This alleged release window lines up with what Sony itself has previously said about how long the current generation of consoles will last.
As part of a consolidated financial report released in February 2024, Sony President and CFO Hiroki Totoki said that the 2020 PlayStation 5 had already entered the “second half” of its life cycle at that point. The statement, which was subsequently repeated by Sony SVP Naomi Matsuoka, suggested that the PS6 is on track to launch by 2028 at the latest.

It sounds like the PS6 will utilize AMD technology
Sony announces a new AMD partnership with two ambitious goals. The collaboration suggests that the PS6 will feature AMD technology.
The possibility of an even earlier release has now been raised by NeoGAF user Kepler_L2, who previously correctly leaked a number of details about the PS5 Pro, as well as sharing plenty of other information about the hardware. On January 17th, Kepler_L2 reported that the PS6 was “design-complete” and currently in “pre-si”.[licon] Validation,” suggesting that Sony is currently digitally testing the console’s system-on-chip to ensure it works as intended before moving forward with creating its first physical prototypes. The first iteration of the PS6 SoC is said to be code – called A0, with tapeout scheduled for the end of 2025. Sony has historically moved to the SoC tapeout phase – the process of making test chips – about two years before commercializing this silicon in mass-produced consoles.
The process node of the PS6 SoC is still unknown
If history repeats itself this time, the PS6 could be released at the end of 2027. In this case, the PS5 would end up having a similar lifespan to the PS4, which also came out seven years before its successor. The process node of the next-gen console chip is still unknown. The PS5's SoC uses TSMC's N7 family of nodes, specifically the 7nm manufacturing process, while its PS5 Pro counterpart is based on the 6nm process of the same family. The PS6 is rumored to be based on AMD's UDNA architecture – the successor to RDNA4, which was previously codenamed RDNA5 – and is expected to introduce a 3nm chip reduction. However, it remains unclear whether the 3nm node will be the only manufacturing process in this family.
The PS6 theme is complete and in pre-release[licon] Validation has already taken place and the A0 tapeout is planned for the end of this year.
PS6 could launch the next generation Xbox console
A possible release of the PS6 in late 2027 suggests that Sony's next console could arrive before the Xbox Series X/S successor(s). Poorly redacted documents from Microsoft's legal battle with the FTC over its 2023 acquisition of Activision Blizzard showed that the Xbox maker is aiming for a 2028 release of its next console – or at least that was the plan as of 2022, when the leaked documents emerged. Either way, as the A0 SoC enters the physical prototype development phase in late 2025, more PS6 hardware leaks could emerge by early 2026.
