Now, Pokémon Gold and Silver are receiving a collection of new merchandise in honor of their upcoming 25th anniversary. The collection is based on the Pokémon and graphics from the two games, including their actual depictions and their soft chibi-style sprites from the games themselves. The collection includes plush toys, color-changing mugs, jackets, home accessories, stationery and more. Arguably one of the cleverest of these is the Color Changing Cup, which uses this effect to show a Pokémon Trainer starting a battle against a wild Pokémon.

The collection will initially be available at Pokemon Center stores in Japan starting November 23rd. There is currently no official information about a full release outside of Japan, but many of these items may become available via Amazon Japan at a later date.

While the plushies and jackets are based on or feature artwork from Ken Sugimori's iconic Pokémon illustrations and concept art, the majority of the merchandise collection is actually based on the sprites from the games. Many of the Pokémon Gold and Silver Sprites were not accurate representations of the Pokémon they represented, as one sprite often represented numerous completely different Pokémon. Due to the size limitations of the cartridges this was a necessity, which may have been disappointing to some at the time, but these days the sprites tend to evoke nostalgia for fans.

Many thought so Pokémon was a flash in the pan phenomenon that would burn out quickly, what Pokémon Gold and Silver turned out to be wrong. The titles were huge successes in both reviews and sales and were so popular that people wanted to try them again Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver ten years later. As the franchise approaches its 30th anniversary, it has become clear that Pokémon is here to stay.
