Marvel Rivals can improve special skins like Maker and Malice

Marvel RivalsThe first season gave players even more content to enjoy, expanding the game's roster of heroes, maps, and game modes before it even became stale. The Midtown map gives players a HERBIE-style payload to fight over, while the Doom Match arcade mode, which takes place in Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, provides a free-to-play experience. A Darkhold-style Battle Pass offers cosmetics to strive for, with players having even more Marvel Rivals Skins to follow as they delve into the story surrounding NetEase's take on Dracula. The main attraction of the season is the Fantastic Four, with Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman playable now and The Thing and Human Torch following later.

Fans didn't waste any time getting to know each other Marvel Rivals' Reed Richards and Sue Storm, who use the former to attack enemies and use the latter to turn allies invisible or enhance Doctor Strange's devious portal strategies. While these two characters are great additions to the Duelist and Strategist categories, they also have special skins that players can purchase. These outfits, Maker and Malice, spotlight two villainous alter egos of the heroes. Unfortunately, the characters look good with these skins but don't, something that future “evil” outfits should change.

The buffs and nerfs of Marvel Rivals' first season raise expectations that NetEase must continue to meet

Marvel Rivals made a few character changes with a balance patch for Season 1, but the buffs and nerfs could be difficult to track in the future.

Marvel Rivals' Maker and Malice skins could be even better with unique dialogue

While Marvel Rivals“Galacta may get on some fans' nerves, and while not everyone agrees with the game's portrayal of characters like Moon Knight, much of the dialogue delivered by the heroes is funny and interesting.” The pre-game conversations are particularly worth listening to, as they reveal knowledge about NetEase's versions of the characters and detail currently unexplored parts of the characters Marvel Rivals Universe. Whether players learn about the existence of Krakoa, witness Spider-Man and Venom being forced to team up, or discover the shared respect between Loki and Magneto, there's plenty to discover before the battle begins.

While Marvel's first family has dialogues with each other and with other heroes in the game, once Reed dons his Ultimate Universe look or Sue gives in to the negative side of her personality, there are no further conversations. This is a real shame, because it would have been great to hear the creator strike fear into the hearts of characters like Loki who are normally unfazed, or the normally friendly Sue striking fear into the hearts of a sweet character like Peni or Luna. There's currently a bit of a disconnect between how the characters look when wearing these skins and how they sound, with Reed seeming too nerdy despite being a supervillain and Sue not seeming disturbed in the least. Beyond the pre-game dialogue, even some new voice lines when eliminating crueler or more threatening enemies could enhance these skins.

Marvel Rivals“While Maker and Malice outfits have special MVP intros and emotes to further enhance the look, the lack of new dialogue still hurts the immersion.

Marvel Rivals' Macher and Malice aren't the only skins that could benefit from special dialogue

Marvel Rivals already has a few other evil looks that would benefit from special dialogue, like “All-Butcher Loki” with Symbiote-style lyrics or “Superior Iron Man” with a more snooty tone. Potential post-launch skins that could really shine with clean lines include:

  • Hydra Captain America

  • Red Hulk

  • Danny Rand Iron Fist

  • Yelena Belova Black Widow

  • Superior and symbiotic Spider-Man

  • Allfather Thor

  • Daken Wolverine

Skins inspired by a different version of the same character or a twisted version of a beloved hero would be even more special if the talented actors behind them were allowed to show their range and take them in new directions. With Marvel Rivals“Major competitor Overwatch occasionally adding unique lines to match certain skins, such as Vengeance Mercy, it would be great to see NetEase's game follow suit with similar outfits. Special pre-game dialogue where certain characters react to their ally's changing aesthetics (and the potential impact on the story) would be icing on the cake and make outfits like Maker and Malice truly great.
