Wonder has experimented with a variety of different genres and gameplay types over the years. From open-world action-adventures to turn-based strategy games with an occult twist to co-op live-service games and even a handful of VR titles, Marvel has released a variety of video game experiences for a wide range of audiences.
But if you look back over the last decade or two of Marvel's video game production, the vast majority of experiences are third-person action games with a Teen ESRB rating or lower. While these games deal with some heavier themes and may have many dramatic moments, overall they try to remain lighthearted. While this obviously fits Marvel's brand, perhaps it would be nice if Marvel experimented with some darker, more mature themes and features every now and then. For example, there's a type of horror game that could be a perfect fit for Marvel this time next year.

Marvel Zombies could pave the way for a new kind of Marvel video game
The Marvel Zombies comic offers great inspiration
In November 2005 there were a number of Ultimate Fantastic Four Comics called “crossovers” were at their peak. In this run, Reed Richards is contacted by an alternate universe version of himself and he crosses over into that universe. This universe is ultimately home to zombified versions of various Marvel heroes and villains who act as a backdoor pilot for the universe Marvel Zombies Run that would begin just a month later.
Published between December 2005 and April 2007, Marvel Zombies was originally a five-issue limited series written by Robert Kirman (by Walking dead Fame) and illustrated by Sean Phillips. This series follows the suggested alternate Earth-2149 Ultimate Fantastic Fourwhere a virus has turned Earth's mightiest heroes and villains into flesh-eating zombies. Unlike most zombie fiction novels Marvel Zombies“Carnivores retain most of their cognitive abilities and superpowers.” The horror comes from what these heroes and villains would do to satisfy their hunger.
Since this 2005-2007 miniseries Marvel Zombies has released a variety of sequels and spin-offs, essentially becoming a standalone Marvel comics series. The most recent entry in the series was Marvel Zombies: Dawn of Decaya run of four issues that began in September and is scheduled to end in December.
The upcoming Disney+ series “Marvel Zombies” could lay the foundation for a game
In 2021, Marvel released this What if…? Animated series on Disney+. One of the episodes of the anthology show, What if… zombies?was directly inspired by that Marvel Zombies comic series, although in this continuity the Avengers were infected with the virus not by an alien, but by Janet van Dyne, who contracted something in the Quantum Realm.
When Bruce Banner is sent back to Earth to warn the world of Thanos' impending arrival, he is ambushed by a horde of zombies, including Doctor Strange and Iron Man. The rest of the episode follows survivors like Wasp, Spider-Man, Hulk, Black Panther and Vision as they attempt to find a cure for the zombie virus. A four-part sequel to this plot is scheduled to appear under this banner in October 2025 Marvel Zombies.
What a Marvel Zombies video game might look like
The coming Marvel Zombies The series gives Marvel a rare opportunity to create a more mature game and experiment with a genre it has never really dabbled in before. A left 4 Dead-style zombie game could work really well for one Marvel Zombies Adaptation that allows players to undertake cooperative zombie-killing missions as a group of iconic heroes or villains across some well-known Marvel locations.
Every few levels, players could get the chance to compete against a zombified version of a popular Marvel character. And much like the show and comic it would adapt to, a central appeal of a Marvel Zombies A video game would allow players to fight heroes they would never normally encounter, such as Captain America or Spider-Man. The Marvel Zombies The theme would also allow for a bit more gore than Marvel games are usually used to.
