Japan is no stranger to unusual collaborations, be it unique anime concepts or partnerships with unexpected brands. That's exactly what's happening right now, as a new collaboration has been unveiled between two big names that couldn't be more different. The first is the dark, supernatural anime Jujutsu Kaisen. The second is none other than the famous brand behind characters like Hello Kitty, Gudetama and Cinnamoroll, Sanrio.
This special new collection went on sale on Halloween, featuring each of the main characters from Jujutsu Kaisen paired with one or two specific Sanrio characters. The collaboration includes exclusive new artwork from the partner characters and of course numerous limited-edition merchandise items for purchase. No specific special events have been announced at this time and the goods are now available both online and in stores in Japan.

If you think about the dark, violent animeJujutsu KaisenThe last thing you'll probably imagine is Hello Kitty and her cute friends. But somehow the collaboration between this supernatural anime and the company behind some of the cutest characters in the world works. The artwork created for the collaboration uses a muted color scheme to balance the dark tones Jujutsu Kaisen with Sanrio's usual bright colors. The character designs are also all done in a cute chibi style rather than the anime's usual character designs, which also helps the collaboration make sense.
In the Jujutsu Kaisen and the Sanrio Special Collection, each of the main characters from the anime were paired with one (or more) of Sanrio's famous characters. 10 in total Jujutsu Kaisen Characters were used, along with 12 Sanrio characters. The pairings are:
- Yuta Itadori with Pochacco
- Sakuna with Hello Kitty
- Satoru Gojo and Cinnamoroll
- Megumi Fushiguro with Bad Badtz-Mar
- Mahito with the little twin stars Kiki and Lala
- Suguru Geto with Lloromannic, berry and cherry
- Nobara Kugisaki with My Melody
- Aoi Todo with candy ribbon
- Kento Nanami with Pompompurin
- Choso with Minna no Tabo
No explanation was given as to why each character pairing was made, leaving fans to speculate as to exactly how the decisions were made. Some have matching hairstyles, like Fushiguro and Bad Badtz-Mar, or similar hair colors, like Mahito and Kiki. Others have responded more to your interpretation of the reasons for the pairing.

More accessible than usual
In all designs for the Jujutsu Kaisen In the Sanrio collection, the Sanrio characters wear the same outfit as their anime counterparts. Many of the anime characters also wear an accessory corresponding to the Sanrio character. Designs are available on various types of merchandise including towels, pens with tag straps, clear folders and stickers.
While this type of collection is usually only available at a themed cafe or pop-up event, the Jujutsu Kaisen x Sanrio collection is much more accessible. Everything in the collection can be purchased online here via the Toho Animation Store, as well as the physical store Animate, which can be found throughout Japan. The collection's availability will continue to expand in the future to make it easier for fans to get their hands on these limited-edition merchandise.
