Incredible drama as Odysseus lunar lander arrives on the moon

The condition of a spaceship attempting America’s first Moon landing in more than 50 years remains in question after it arrived in dramatic scenes on Friday morning (AEDT).

The US-made commercial spacecraft Odysseus lunar lander has touched down in what Houston-based Intuitive Machines is describing as a successful mission.

But its operators were left sweating and forced to make a late switch as it made its descent after the craft’s own navigation system stopped working.

“I know this was a nailbiter, but we are on the surface, and we are transmitting,” Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus said. “Welcome to the moon.”

“Without a doubt our equipment is on the surface of the Moon, and we are transmitting,” added his colleague Tim Crain. “Congratulations, IM team, we’ll see how much more we can get from that.”
