The Sims 4: Life and Death The expansion pack revolves around a soul's profound journey, both in life and after death, offering players a deeper experience of living, dying and being a spirit. While ghosts have been part of the game since the base release, Life and death transforms their experience by giving them unique powers and interactions on par with other occult Sims like vampires and spellcasters. While ghosts can even retain some of their occult powers after they die, the ghost mastery each Sim gains after death is quite unique – and can be used for both good and evil, or anything in between.

With The Sims 4: Life & Death expansion, players can finally give their Sims a more meaningful farewell.
The introduction of the Ghost Mastery tree also opens up some new possibilities for ghosts that go beyond other occult realms and are definitely worth exploring. Ultimately, Sims should aim to improve their Spirit Mastery to unlock additional benefits. However, at least in doing so, they can occasionally receive Fear and Benevolence Essence, which can be passive income for Ghost Sims.
How to obtain essences of fear and goodwill?
The Ghost Mastery tree, accessible from the Simology panel, allows players to track their unlockable skills as they perform actions from the Ghost Mastery circle menu, be it on themselves, on other Sims, or even on objects. This menu is divided into three sections: Evil Abilities, Neutral Abilities, and Good Abilities. While neutral skills provide no essence, evil skills produce fear essence and good skills produce goodwill essence. Typically, higher level spirit abilities provide more of their respective essence than lower level spirit abilities. Therefore, players should focus on the Ghost Cake menu and choose either Chaos or Terror abilities to generate Fear Essence, while Comfort or Support abilities generate Goodwill Essence.
Both Essences automatically appear in the Spirit Sim's inventory, grouped together in a single section for the Fear and Good Will Essence, and can stack over 99 times.
When Sims unlock the Fear of the Night ability in the neutral section of the Spirit Master Tree, they gain access to more intense actions that generate additional Fear Essence at night. This ability can be particularly useful for players looking to unlock the Curse from Another World ability in the Evil section, as it allows them to maximize their essence collection while pursuing more sinister forces.
How to use essences of fear and goodwill?
The main purpose of these essences is to generate additional Simoleons, as these can be sold to the mysterious merchant in Ravenwood. Each Essence sells for 5 Simoleons, meaning it's not the most lucrative activity if players are specifically looking to make money – activities like painting have significantly higher returns in a shorter amount of time, especially if the skill is higher. However, as players perform various Spirit Mastery actions to improve their Spirit's abilities, the collection of Fear and Goodwill Essences will naturally accumulate over time. This makes it a nice bonus that allows players to benefit while enjoying the unique game mechanics introduced in Life and death Extension.
