The author of A pieceEiichiro Oda, is a master of mystery, suspense, and massive twists that turn everything fans thought they knew on its head. Because of this style of storytelling, there are many characters he introduces into the story that later turn out to be far more important than they first seemed. Although fans don't know much about him, Monkey D. Dragon will almost certainly fit in here as well.
As leader of the Revolutionary Army, Dragon is already one of the most important figures in the entire A pieceas he represents a massive organization that acts as the polar opposite of the World Government. However, there are a few more possible revelations about him that, if true, could give him an even more crucial role in the story, so let's see what those could be!
The man marked by flames
The dragon may have the last Poneglyph
The man marked by flames is one of the greatest and most important mysteries A piece that remains unsolved. This mysterious figure is someone who is in possession of the last Road Poneglyph, or at least knows its location, and there is currently no more famous figure to embody this role than Monkey D. Dragon himself!
While nothing has been said about it, it's pretty clear that the flame-scarred man has to be an incredibly important figure in the world, and Dragon definitely is, as he is the leader of one of the World Government's greatest enemies. Many people think that this mysterious person is actually Scopper Gaban of the Roger Pirates, as he knew the location of this Poneglyph on Fishman Island and is otherwise a pretty important figure as well.
However, due to all other information known about the Flame-Scarred Man, Dragon is a better fit. First, Dragon's sphere of influence is extensive, as he has agents and supporters throughout the known world, so his knowledge of the Poneglyph on Fishman Island is very likely. Furthermore, the Flame-Scarred Man is said to sail on a black ship with black sails and is surrounded by whirlpools that sink anyone who comes too close.
This fits with Dragon's own ship and perhaps even his powers, which were hinted at in Loguetown as allowing him to control the wind. Also, his name Dragon is obviously a reference to fire, so there has to be a connection here to the flames themselves as well as the mark on his left eye, suggesting that he too was “marked” at some point!
The bearer of a fruit of God
Kites may have the power to control the wind
When the Straw Hats visited Loguetown, Dragon first appeared to stop Smoker from capturing Luffy. His presence also brought with it powerful storms that ultimately saved Luffy from his execution and provided him with a way to escape the Marines' clutches. Since then, fans have always wondered about Dragon's powers.
A pirate, eh? Not a bad idea.
In the Skypeia Arc, a brief flashback revealed that the Shandorans believed in different gods: the Sun God, the Rain God, the Forest God, and the Earth God. Later, in Wano, it was confirmed that at least the Sun God actually existed, through the power Luffy received from his mythical Zoan Devil Fruit, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. Since this revelation, fans have theorized that Dragon also ate the Rain God Fruit, which allows him to control the weather! Judging by the brief glimpse fans caught of his supposed powers, this could very well be the case.
The Son of the Rocks D. Xebec
The dragon may have a special lineage
This is probably the most outlandish theory of all: there is a small chance that Dragon is actually the son of the legendary Rock D. Xebec! The reason some fans believe this is because Dragon doesn't look like his son Luffy or his father Garp. They both actually look quite similar and even have very similar scars around their left eyes. Dragon, on the other hand, has a tattoo.
The reason some believe he is Rocks' son is because they look very similar, at least in the few silhouettes of Rocks shown so far, with their sharp faces and long dark hair. Furthermore, Garp has never directly confirmed that Dragon is his son, only that he is Luffy's father, which opens up the possibility that their relationship is through Luffy's mother. Garp has always just stated that Luffy is his child's child, without really specifying whether it was Dragon or not.
Shameless punk! You are my child's son, Luffy!
It's also not entirely unreasonable to assume that Garp would have raised Rocks' son as his own. This is because he had already done so with Ace after Roger died, with Roger even telling Garp through his prison cell that he knew Garp would. Perhaps Roger said this because his Marine rival had done it before! This proved that despite being their enemy, Garp was still willing to raise a son whose father was an enemy of the Marines and the World Government!
