In Fall of the throneYour units are smart and automatically attack nearby enemies. However, troops without a commander can create loopholes for enemies to exploit. For example, racers always go for the castle and ignore every other structure in your kingdom. Since the castle is the heart of your kingdom, you never want to leave it unguarded. If the castle falls, the game endsTherefore, always make sure that it is well protected.
You can prepare for these scenarios by commanding your units and ordering them to hold positions in key locations such as walls, barracks and the castle. However, figuring out how to consistently command units and get them to hold their position can be quite difficult. If you find yourself in a similar situation, the following guide should help.

This is how commanding units work in Thronefall
When you command units in Thronefall, a small circle appears around your character and any unit that is within that circle follows your character. For example, these units can be led to strategic areas in your kingdom They can overcome exposed structures and bottlenecks, or even act as a second line of defense when the first line of defense falls.
You can Command units by pressing “R” on the keyboard or Square/Y on the controller. This action causes all troops within the circle to rotate around your character, indicating that they have been ordered and are awaiting further orders. Commanded units follow your character but cannot attack unless you choose the Commander perk after upgrading the castle for the second time.
You can press “R” on the keyboard or Square/Y on the controller to take away command of your troops. This will keep the troops in the position where you left them. However, they can move of their own accord if they find enemies nearby. Holding down “R” or Square/Y will command units to hold their position. Once units have been ordered to hold a specific position, They stay there until you give them orders again, the fight ends, or they die and respawn.
You can also use keyboard shortcuts to command specific units or even the entire army:
- Command the entire army: Press “1” on the keyboard or R3 on the controller.
- Command all melee fighters: Press “2” on the keyboard or move the right analog stick on the controller to the left.
- Command all ranged attackers: Press “3” on the keyboard or move the right analog stick on the controller to the right.
- Command all heroes: Press “4” on the keyboard or move the right analog stick up on the controller.
- Command a unit type: Press “F” on the keyboard or Circle/B on the controller.

Why should you command units in Thronefall?
While you can rely on your troops to defend nearby buildings, Commanding them allows you to strategically plan upcoming battles. Since the game gives you information about the enemy combination in advance, you can order your troops to hold key positions and slow the attacker's advance towards the castle.
As mentioned, the second time you upgrade your castle, you can choose the “Commander” perk, which allows commanded troops to attack if they follow your example. Additionally, Commanded troops move 60% faster and when ordered to hold the position, These troops gain 20% additional HP. These benefits are compelling reasons to take a more active role in leading your units Fall of the throne.
