October 16th marks an interesting anniversary for Red Dead Redemption 2 as fans look back on the moments leading up to the game's release.
Former Microsoft manager Dr. Sajid Farooq and Red Dead Redemption 2 Developer James Rackliffe founded ILHAM, a studio focused on producing titles with perspectives from the cultures of the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. Farooq, a former DirectX head, believes gamers crave new ideas and has teamed up with Rackliffe, who has experience as an EA director and with technical quality assurance on modern gaming classics Red Dead Redemption 2to prove that.
Industry veterans make up ILHAM
ILHAM's first game is described as an AA open-world survival title for PC and consoles, and the developers are committed to pushing “the boundaries of both the genre and the players themselves,” signaling that the experience isn't just will contain a lot of depth, but challenges for experienced players to make something new out of it. Although I like games with a strong narrative focus The Last of Us and Resident Evil 7 are highly praised entries in the survival gaming genre, but offer no insight into the piece of culture that ILHAM aims to offer with its new title.
It's a difficult task to create a survival title that offers a compelling narrative as well as complex and fulfilling gameplay mechanics, but many veteran developers seem to be banding together to form new studios with these goals in mind. Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser founded Absurd Ventures, which aims to bring players another new, story-driven adventure IP. With ILHAM, James Rackliffe expressed a desire to explore the lore and mysticism of the Middle East in a way that is rarely the case in current games. ILHAM's upcoming game could take players and developers alike into new territory.
