Diablo 4: Rogue Specialization Guide

Of the five unique class mechanicsDiablo 4 The Rogue's specialization system is arguably the most build defining, even if it is the least customizable. Rogues don't need to gain additional experience like the Barbarian or spirit sacrifices like a Druid, and they don't have to contend with a custom tree: Rogues just get three game-changing passive options.

Diablo 4: How to Unlock Season Blessings (and What They Do)

Seasonal Blessings can be upgraded throughout Diablo 4 Season 4 and provide powerful seasonal bonuses through the unique Smoldering Ashes system.

The three Rogue specializations – Combo Points, Inner Sight, and Preparation – each benefit players differently, but there is no way to equip all three at the same time. All three options unlock as players reach level 30, giving you plenty of time to figure out which specialization works best for your preferred rogue playstyle Diablo 4.

Updated on October 23, 2024 by Erik Petrovich: In Diablo 4, Specializations are the Rogue class' unique feature that allows players to customize Rogue builds beyond the effects granted by Skills, Equipment, and Paragon Points. Rogues have three specialization options, each suited to different playstyles or rogue builds. After several updates since Diablo 4's release, the Rogue specialization abilities still function in the same way as they did at release, but all three specialization options have been updated and changed multiple times since release. This guide to Diablo 4's Rogue Specialization feature has been updated to reflect the stats and effects of each specialization as of Diablo 4 Season 6.

How to unlock and equip Rogue Specializations

Diablo 4 Rogue starting gear

Rogue specializations become available at level 15, but only one of the three options is unlocked: the Combo Point specialization. At level 20, the Inner Sight specialization becomes available, while level 30 unlocks the final specialization, Preparation.

However, before players can actually use one of these rogue specializations, they must complete an associated questline. Once Rogues reach level 15, their quest log will be updated with the True Potential quest, which will take them to the Forsaken Quarry dungeon. After Bakira is defeated and the quest is completed, Combo Points should be unlocked as an option. After this first quest is completed, reaching level 20 and level 30 will automatically unlock the other choices with no requirements.

Diablo 4: How to Respect

In Diablo 4, it's easy to refund skill points and reassign for a new build. What's not so simple is how much gold reallocating can cost.

To select a specialization, simply open the character/inventory menu and use the shoulder buttons or click to go to the Specializations screen. Your currently available specializations are displayed here. Simply select one to activate it – it's as simple as that. This is more convenient than most other classes' options as it can be changed at any time, even mid-battle.

Combo Point Specialization – Unlock Level 15 (Standard)

Your basic skills now generate combo points.

Core skills consume combo points for additional effects.

This rogue specialization gives new effects to a range of abilities by adding combo points. Similar to the villain of World of WarcraftCombo points are generated by basic attacks and spent by core abilities to increase their power or add another effect.

Core abilities include Barrage, Rapid Fire, Piercing Shot, Flurry, and Spinning Blades, and each is significantly boosted when cast with Combo Points. For example, Barrage and Rapid Fire fire more arrows with increased damage, Penetrating Shot nearly doubles damage for just one combo point, and Flurry and Spinning Blades grant attack and movement speed respectively, as well as huge damage boosts.

Prioritize unlocking Torment 1 difficulty in Diablo 4 for the best chance at high-tier loot and increase your gold and XP gains.

Inner Seeing Specialization – Unlocks at level 20

Attack enemies to fill your Inner Vision Gauge.

Marked enemies fill the Inner Sight gauge faster.

When filled, you gain unlimited energy and +25% critical strike chance for 4 seconds

The Inner Sight specialization marks a random enemy in a pack with a purple icon. When players encounter this enemy, they will gain Inner Sight, a new resource that appears next to the regular energy meter. When the Inner Sight gauge is completely filled, it empties, completely refilling the player's energy reserves.

The Inner Sight marker moves from enemy to enemy when they are killed or if they are alive for more than 10 seconds while marked. This has no negative effect on the villain, it simply moves the marker to a new target. In boss fights, the Inner Sight mark almost always remains on the boss itself, meaning the energy replenishment can be triggered much more quickly.

Prep Specialization – Unlocks at level 30

Spend 75 Energy to reduce the cooldown of your ultimate ability by 5 seconds.

Ultimates reset all other cooldowns and grant 15% damage reduction for 10 seconds.

The preparation specialization reduces the cooldown of the rogue's ultimate abilities, but only after he has used at least 75 energy. For every 75 Energy a player spends on abilities, the cooldown of their ultimate ability is reduced by 5 seconds. Additionally, using an ultimate ability will completely reset the cooldown of all other abilities and also give you a 15% damage reduction. This damage reduction lasts for 10 seconds.

This may not seem like much, but players can build and expend energy remarkably quickly, especially with late-game rogue builds. Preparation is a skill worth building because it has the potential to almost never run out of cooldowns and skill availability, and because ultimates are a much more viable choice thanks to their huge cooldown reduction. Simply choose an ultimate that recharges quickly to benefit from this cooldown reset as often as possible.
