Comparison of the Commando and Recoilless Rifles in Helldivers 2

In Helldivers 2A rocket launcher with a variety of uses is a pleasant weapon. Unlike the one-shot missiles of the EAT-17 or the cooldowns of the Eagle and Orbital strategies, a missile launcher with repeatable missions means there is always an anti-tank option when needed. If multiple Bile Titans, Chargers, or Hulks decide to ambush a squad of Helldivers from a dark alley, those divers do not need to access their stratagem menu to begin self-defense.

Helldivers 2: The best mods you can install now

This may come as a surprise, but Helldivers 2 has a dedicated modding community that has gradually released several high-quality mods.

Among the game's options, two rocket launchers shine in this regard: The GR-8 recoilless rifle and the ML5-4X Command. Which of these two should players use when making their bets? Following patch 1.001.104 and the completion of Arrowhead's 60-day remediation campaign Helldivers 2There are now a bit more nuances to consider between these two rocket launchers.

Advantages and disadvantages of the recoilless rifle

Extreme flexibility and firepower with slow reloading

Helldivers 2 recoilless rifle

Advantages

Disadvantages

+ High single target damage

– A rocket

+ 5 additional rounds

– 6 seconds reload

+ Reloading takes place in two phases

– Requires a backpack slot

+ The superior packing method allows all 5 rockets to be loaded into the backpack

– Punishment if player misses

+ High explosive programmable missile can deal with huge hordes

– Long cooldown between calls

+ Works well with a second Helldiver that reloads the user

+ Better against terminids, but can also be used against automatons

Best destinations:

Everything except attack helicopters

  • Kill an Impaler with one shot
  • Takes out Gall Titan in one shot to the head
  • Destroyed Factory walker in one shot to the eye
  • Can kill you charger Behemoth with a body shot (it will bleed out over time) or a head shot
  • High-explosive rockets fight small enemies

The GR-8 recoilless rifle is a silver bullet against virtually everything in the game. A missile can destroy Bile Titans, Factory Striders, Chargers and Hulks. Thanks to patch 1.001.104, the recoilless rifle now has the option to switch to high-explosive projectiles, making it perfect for taking out dense hordes. This makes the recoilless rifle suitable against virtually any type of target, with the exception of large, distant groups of enemies.

However, The player using a recoilless rifle must trade backpack space for these amazing advantages and suffer painfully slow reloads. A teammate with another recoilless rifle or with the player's backpack can reload this weapon immediately, but requires a second Helldiver to be near the recoilless rifle user at all times.

Despite these disadvantages, the recoilless rifle's flexible aiming accuracy and high damage make it well worth using as a stratagem rifle. This missile launcher can rival Eagle Airstrikes or Orbitals in terms of anti-tank capabilities, but the ability to fire through swarms or armored targets up to five times per call remains a valuable asset.

Advantages and disadvantages of the Commando

Multi-shot missiles with few targeting requirements

Commando rocket launcher in Helldivers 2

Advantages

Disadvantages

+ 4 rocket shots before the launcher is discarded

– Lower cooldown than the recoilless rifle

+ 3 shots can take out most heavy targets

– Must be recalled after 4 shots

+ Laser-guided missiles

– Cannot be redelivered or reloaded

+ Easier aiming at long distances

– Weakest single rocket compared to other rocket launchers

+ Does not use backpack slot

+ Better against bots, but can also be used against Terminids

Best destinations:

The ML5-4X Command is at its best when it can be used to efficiently eliminate large threats from long distances. While it will struggle to be more efficient than the recoilless rifle against heavily armored targets such as jelly titans or tanks, Its laser-guided missile and 4-round magazine make it particularly useful against multiple armored targets that can attack the player in larger numbers. Hulks and Chargers are the perfect example of this, as they can be shot down with a single aimed missile (one into the Hulk's eye or one into the Charger's glowing tail). Failing this, the Charger's legs can be stripped of their armor with one missile, and a Hulk's weapons can be demolished with two missiles.

Heavily armored targets, large hordes and swarms of armored targets that require two Commando missiles to shoot down, such as the Automaton. gunship Command fails when faced with enemies. However, one advantage of using the Commando is that it can take out targets such as Bile Titans, Factory Striders and Impalers from a reasonably safe distance without strict targeting. The Commando will need to fire 3 to 4 missiles to take down these targets, but the Commando's fast rate of fire still makes this a useful option if the player needs it.

Commando vs recoilless rifle

Which one should you use?

The two biggest factors determine whether the player should bring this ML5-4X Command or GR-8 recoilless rifleAre whether the player needs his backpack space and how many other anti-tank options his build has. Builds that require their backpack space and have many hard anti-tank options, such as Orbital railcannon attack or Orbital precision strike can use the commando. In these builds, Orbital Precision Strike or a similar strategy would feel like a waste to use against Chargers and Hulks, while the Commando can use it efficiently with just a tap.

Builds with long-lasting warfare weapons like Autocannon, Railgun, and Recoilless can still benefit from a Commando. Simply invoke it in situations where it is paramount, drop the current stratagem weapon, launch the 4 missiles to eliminate the threat, then pick up the original weapon again.

On the other hand, if Helldivers don't mind using their backpack space and need more anti-tank firepower, the Recoilless Rifle is the winner. Unlike the Commando, the Recoilless Rifle can handle most situations a Helldiver may find themselves in, from hordes to armored targets. As long as the player can balance their long reload time (or have a Helldiver to help them) and bring stratagems or weapons that can cover enemies like gunships, there is little downside to the recoilless rifle.
