In the days leading up to the Game Awards, Gearbox Software's Randy Pitchford began praising a new game Borderlands 4 Trailer that would be huge and include gameplay, which finally confirmed that TGA was the place where it would be shown. One of the key components of the Borderlands 4 trailer is the reveal of what appears to be the game's new big bad in the form of The Timekeeper, an entity previously mentioned in Borderlands 3. Although the general gameplay clips in the trailer got some fans excited, one of the most anticipated parts of the trailer was the reveal of the new Vault Hunters.
Borderlands 4Following the release of the new trailer, 's Vault Hunters faced criticism pretty quickly for being too “boring” in terms of design and appearance, which may be exacerbated by the fact that they can all seem like normal people. Very little is known about the characters, important details such as their abilities, specializations and even names remain obscure. It's likely that more will be revealed in the future with a special Vault Hunter trailer, but for now there are a few hints that could play into these characters' roles and archetypes within the franchise.

Why Borderlands 4's Vault Hunters May Have Already Defined Gameplay Roles
Borderlands 4’s Vault Hunters – The Assassin Archetype
Looking from left to right, the first Vault Hunter appears to be wearing very little armor, a sign that he may be a more agile fighter. This fits the Assassin archetype perfectly, like Zer0. This theory seems to be confirmed by the fact that they are shown with what appear to be energy blades and a visor, possibly tied to some sort of exoskeleton. With skills that may focus on aerial evasion and melee combat, it seems entirely plausible that this is how this character will play Borderlands 2is Zer0 more than any other archetype. Another possible similarity is with Athena Borderlands: The Pre-Sequelalthough it seems less likely given their elemental approach to combat.
Vault Hunters from Borderlands 4 – The Siren archetype
It's hard to guess who the second Vault Hunter from the left might be, as his tattoos suggest he's a siren. Given the color of the tattoos, they could be related to the Scrawled Slug damage type Borderlands 2 That didn't carry over Borderlands 3. That makes more sense if Borderlands 4 follows the trend of “elemental tattoos” for the siren, similar to Amara Borderlands 3 or Lilith from the first game.
However, this may not be the case, and instead the new Siren's powers have nothing to do with Slug or existing elements in the franchise. However, there is a possibility that the Siren's powers have something to do with mobility, as in the trailer she runs slightly faster than another Vault Hunter. Still, this may be strictly for the trailer and not actual abilities Borderlands 4Gameplay will include:
Vault Hunters from Borderlands 4 – The soldier or mercenary archetype
The tall and burly Vault Hunter, third from the left, clearly has some robotic parts, like his left arm and possibly even his legs. This is nothing new for the franchise, as Wilhelm as Boss shows Borderlands 2 and then as a playable Vault Hunter in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. This character is seen in the game with a grappling hook ability, but it remains to be seen whether this will be an exclusive ability for this Vault Hunter.
More importantly, this character is shown turning drones into elemental axes that are thrown at enemies, meaning the associated class for the Vault Hunter can be the Soldier archetype, possibly that of the Brawler or even the Mercenary. This means they fall somewhere on the spectrum between characters like Roland, Brick, and Zane.
It's worth noting that this Vault Hunter may have robotic upgrades to his abilities and body, like Wilhelm did in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.
Vault Hunters from Borderlands 4 – The Archer or Mechromancer archetype.
Finally, the fourth Vault Hunter from the left is shown the least in the trailer, and unlike the Siren, whose powers and abilities one might assume based on the series' approach, this remains an ongoing mystery. Based on appearance alone, this Vault Hunter could resemble both Borderlands 3's Moze or Borderlands 2is Gaige, with the archetypes in question being the Archer and the Mechromancer.
There's also the possibility that this vault hunter will focus more on weapons as a whole, similar to Nisha from Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel or Salvador Borderlands 2. However, in the trailer the figure is shown with what looks like a jetpack, and his pants have what look like tubes that contain some fluid. This may be related to this border areas The game's elements, possibly Cryo given the design, make this Vault Hunter more of an inventor and gadget user than the Gunner or Mechromancer the series has featured so far.
When to expect more Borderlands 4 news
Overall, it remains to be seen whether Borderlands 4's Vault Hunters will reinvent the wheel in terms of gameplay, but it's likely that they'll all have some familiar elements while still having a defined personal identity. With the game releasing in 2025, it seems logical that a new trailer will be released soon, possibly sometime in the first quarter of next year, with the game releasing in the fall – if previous releases are anything to go by.
