Best indie games, January 2025

Quick links

With February in full swing and a stacked series of heavy rackets from the acquaintance and Monster Hunter Wilds, who like a kite: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, I wanted to think about what a quiet big month for Indies was turned out.

We had everything, from psychedelic poetry to annoying, horror tip games in PSX style and noir Detective Mysteries. It was a varied month with some incredible games that, like 2025, should not forget. As soon as things are calmed down, these Indies earn a place at their deficit.

Dead Letter Dept.

I am already sure that I have had mouthwashes in 2025 (which achieved a number of awards from the Thegamer Aces). In this horror game in the old school, you stumble grim apartment corridors to reach your dead end office job, in which she can transcribe the contribution that AI cannot read.

The liminal, threatening empty rooms are reminiscent of the backrooms and night vision-like fuzz, which covers the screen, combined with the voyeuristic feeling, when the mail stretches it directly to it, transforms a pedagogical predecessor back and forth with one with one Invisible observer. It is a surreal experience that I don't want to spoil.

Dreamcore

Dreamcore speaks of the back rooms and embodies them like no other game I've ever played. Each level is a labyrinth of empty border rooms, such as an infinite suburb, with the only goal.

The horror lies in the haunted, fantastic labyrinths that you have to enforce instead of cheap jumping or ungainless monsters. It is sometimes frustrating, since the core gameplay loop is that it runs into a twisted face of normality, but the nervous mood stumble through the darkness to find an escape that is worth every second.

A butterfly

This is the shortest and cheapest indie on the list of only 89p and less than an hour. A butterfly comes from developers Alienmelon, of whom you may know that everything is okay and Tettetrateddon games.

It is a beautiful, albeit urgent poem about grief, which is told by the visual, interactive medium of the games, in which it flies through a cemetery of huge giant, which extend their hands into heaven and with pop UPS are interspersed with retro wind-XP style. All of this is told by a crackling, disembodied voice.

Honorable ACS: Tails of Iron 2, Citizen Sleeper 2, Butcher's Creek, beyond the Citadel

Cat tower Albert Wilde

From the moment I was on when I saw only a screenshot a cat, in black and white, 4: 3, in a Hitchcock-inspired shot, of which I only saw a screenshot a cat.

The game did not disappoint because its meta self-referential gags made fun of the detective games in the tatal and point & click style. MonkeyWith a charming line -up of animal characters. It is Blacksad with a scatter Bojack Horseman.

Helskate

After a year, Helskate finally went back from early access. If you have not yet heard of this brilliant little indie, it is Tony Hawks Pro Skater meets Hades, in which the conclusion of Levels requires points and at the same time sends the atrocities of the underworld.

It is not as detailed as many of his inspiration and still feels as if it could be part of early access, but if you are a fan of skating and monster sled, it scratches more than scratches.

Awful

We have completed this list of January edge stones with a boomer shooter. I am nothing if not predictable. When washing the mouth of Dead Letter Dept. 2025 is, then cruel mullet Madjack 2025.

A raging fire is all the time when you play, hot on your heels. If you last too long, you will be included in the inferno so that the swing is the key – similar to Mullet Madjack, you have to press forward and kill enemies to strengthen the timer. However, the core gameplay loop is a little different. Instead of climbing towers, collect soda to feed a dog that you call cards that increase your magazine size, slow the fire, etc.

The dirty, simple apartment and grizzly, quake -like designs with powerful weapons and a constant blood fluctuation make this a nostalgic recall of the Golden Age of the FPS. But the quick pace gives him a unique advantage. Every level is like a tikkok … wait, wait. Listen to me. Cruel and mullet Madjack are not a “boomer” shooter, they are Zoomer Protect. EY? However, they play cruel (and every other game on this list).
