We can also see that agreeableness tends to run along moral alignment.
The creativity of the Baldur's Gate 3 community never ceases to amaze – answering the questions no one has asked, but still being curious about the answer. Have you ever wondered which companions share the most similar opinions? If we were to place each of our beloved companions on a political compass, where would they end up?
That's a mystery for another day, but Tarresque_Named_John has begun to shed light on the question of where the Companions' opinions stand in relation to one another. In a Reddit thread, this eminent scholar used data-mining dialogue files to map how often each companion agreed with another companion, thereby quantifying the agreement of each pair of characters.
Through the numbers
Having access to data-based files certainly made the task easier since they didn't have to spend hundreds of hours triggering every dialog imaginable, but it was still a herculean task. In their methodology, the definition of agreeableness is outlined as whether the companion expresses approval or disapproval of the player's actions. If two companions both approve of an action, they are considered to agree with each other. If they disagree, it is considered a disagreement.
The best way to observe the results is through Tarresque_Named_John's well-designed graphics, but I'll give you an overview of some of the highlights. The most pleasant couple is Minsk and Karlach, who agree 97 percent of the time. This is followed by Wyll & Halsin (96), Minsc & Halsin (96), Jaheira & Halsin (95) and Karlach & Halsin (95). Apparently Halsin is a very pleasant guy.
The least pleasant couple is Astarion and Wyll, who only share an opinion 50% of the time. This is not at all surprising given their conflicting moral guidelines. They follow: Minthara & Halsin (51), Wyll & Minthara (52) and Karlach & Astarion (52). When push comes to shove, not many people in the party agree with the two extremely sociopathic characters.
In terms of pure numbers (and not percentages), Wyll and Karlach are the official best friends of Baldur's Gate 3, agreeing on a total of 1,563 different times. In contrast, Baldur's Gate 3's worst friends are a tie between Jaheira and Minthara and Minsc and Minthara. Both pairs only agreed on a paltry 341 times throughout the game.
It's clear from the data that Larian wrote the characters' reactions based on moral alignment, albeit with some nuanced opinions here and there.
Baldur's Gate 3 is the long-awaited next chapter in the Dungeons & Dragons-based RPG series. Developed by Divinity creator Larian Studios, it puts you in the middle of a mind flayer invasion of Faerûn, over a century after the events of its predecessor.
