Summary
-
Astro Bot has won 104 Game of the Year awards to date, making it the most awarded platform game of all time.
-
It overtook previous record holder It Takes Two, which scooped 88 GOTY awards.
-
The records so far only go back to 2013, but it's unlikely that there were enough accolades before that for a single platformer to surpass Astro Bot.
Most who have played Astro Bot will tell you that they knew straight away that it was a special game. Let's face it, most of us knew it when the first trailer came out. Astro's momentum continued through the final months of 2024 and into 2025 as the media voted the game Game of the Year from all quarters. So many have done this that it now has more GOTY awards than any other platformer in history.
That's according to a website that tracks the Game of the Year awards (thanks, NextGenPlayer). According to the website's balance sheet Astro Bot has received 104 awards and counting. While that's not nearly the overall record holder – that record could always belong to Elden Ring – it still seems to be enough to make it the most successful platform game of all time and surpass it The 88 awards It Takes Two received in 2021.

It Takes Two is the only other platformer to have won more GOTY awards in a single year than any other title, at least during The Game Awards era, but that doesn't automatically mean that Astro Bot has won more GOTY awards than any other platformer. There could have been a year where a big platformer won a lot of awards but was beaten by something like Elden Ring or The Last Of Us Part 2. It turns out that's not the case.

This makes it the most awarded platformer of all time
The only platformer I immediately went to when checking the GOTY scores to make sure Astro Bot really was the new record holder was Super Mario Odyssey. While Odyssey's 37 awards To show how underrated good platform games are, let's come to awards season. It was released in the same year as The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. Had BOTW not been released in 2017, many of its GOTYs would likely have gone to Odyssey and the platformer wouldn't have finished third behind Horizon Zero Dawn.
This is worth mentioning The GOTY tracker only goes back to 2013that is, a year before the Game Awards began and the title deemed the best of the year by Geoff Keighley's show was unofficially agreed upon as the big title. However, the website appears to be retroactively counting awards totals from previous years, while 2012 is currently running.
This means that there is a chance that Astro Bot will quickly have his newfound crown stripped away, even if that seems unlikely. While a game like Super Mario Galaxy 2 was undoubtedly named Game of the Year by many media outlets in 2010, and there were fewer awards up for grabs back then, it's highly unlikely that it took home more than 104 trophies. Astro will continue to win awards in the coming weeks. 15 more and it will overtake 2019's GOTY, Death Stranding.
When the PS5 mothership is attacked by Astro's long-time galactic nemesis, its wires become tangled and the crew scattered in space, only Astro can fix everything! He's embarking on his biggest mission yet and needs your help to rescue the stranded crew and rebuild the mothership.
