The SteamDB player count charts don't paint a pretty picture for the early days of Assassin's Creed Mirage's Steam release. On the first Saturday after its release, when most players were expected to stick around, the game peaked at 6,381 players at the time of writing. Look at the last games in the Assassin's Creed Series, Origins Peak at 41,551 players, Odyssey at 62,069, and Valhalla at 15,679. That's a significant decrease for Assassin's Creed Mirage. In the interest of fairness Valhalla is the only game in the RPG trio that wasn't released on Steam on its first day, which explains the lower number.
Assassin's Creed Mirage's Steam player count is lower than recent entries
To put these numbers into perspective at the time of writing: Assassin's Creed Mirage has 3,691 current players. Assassin's Creed Odysseywhich was released back in 2018, has 3,370. These rough initial figures could of course change, but especially given this, they are certainly surprising Assassin's Creed Mirage was released on Steam with a whopping 50% discount, bringing the price down to $24.99 through October 24th.
There's no doubt that the numbers are skewed by the delayed Steam release, but that won't be a problem for Ubisoft games in the future. Assassin's Creed Shadows will launch on Steam on day one, as will most of the publisher's games going forward, which should make a big difference as the player count for the series looks much healthier. As for the series as a whole, it's going to be a busy few years. A current rumor says that ten Assassin's Creed Additional games are scheduled to be released over the next five years, which would be a big start for a series that hasn't released a mainline title in either 2021 or 2022. Let's wait and see if it bears fruit.
