The flaws of Vegeta's Ultra Ego

Key insights

  • Vegeta's Ultra Ego is a powerful form that counters Ultra Instinct, making attacks more powerful as damage increases.
  • Ultra Ego lacks stamina, which can lead to possible blackouts mid-fight, but could improve with training.
  • Fans have mixed feelings about Ultra Ego's design, preferring Vegeta to keep black hair and look more regal.

Since Dragon Ball Supers After the Tournament of Power arc aired, fans had fallen in love with Goku's brand new Ultra Instinct transformation, which allows him to use the techniques of angels. However, since then, fans had been eagerly waiting for Vegeta to unlock a divine technique that would once again bring him to his rival's level, which was answered in the Granolah arc when Vegeta unlocked the incredible Ultra Ego!

This form essentially acted as the polar opposite of Ultra Instinct, serving as a marker to show fans that Vegeta was on a journey to gain strength, but on his own. Although the form was just as powerful as Ultra Instinct when it first appeared, it has several flaws that must be addressed before Vegeta can reach its full potential. So let's take a look at Ultra Ego's shortcomings and how Vegeta can fix them in the future Dragon Ball.

The flaws of Ultra Ego

Vegeta, Beerus, gods of destruction

Ultra Ego is the most powerful transformation Vegeta has ever undergone. Since it is the divine technique favored by the Destroyer Gods, it puts Vegeta into a special state that is quite similar to what Goku does when he becomes Ultra Instinct, but the effect this form has, is the opposite of that. Although the Gods of Destruction are constantly in this state due to their nature as destroyers, Vegeta requires a new transformation to house this destructive power.

Ultra Ego's main ability is the opposite of Ultra Instinct, with the latter requiring the user to have incredible calm to allow the body to react instinctively to attacks, allowing the user to not waste time thinking about dodging. However, Ultra Ego makes the user stronger the more damage they take, meaning their next attack will be far more powerful than the previous ones.

For me, damage is nothing but fuel. Do you know what that means? I'm only getting stronger!

As the name suggests, Vegeta becomes excessive in the attacks he takes head-on, dealing damage so that his next attack is even stronger than before. While Ultra Instinct serves as the perfect defense, Ultra Ego serves as the perfect attack. However, this is where the form's biggest flaw lies, as the user of this transformation can end up taking more damage than they can handle, which can lead to their defeat.

At the moment, Ultra Ego is just as strong, if not stronger, offensively than Ultra Instinct, but since Vegeta has only used the form once without training, it is very unrefined, similar to Ultra Instinct Omen. One way to make Ultra Ego just as overpowered as Ultra Instinct is to make Vegeta's body extremely durable through training, similar to Goku's body in his mastered Ultra Instinct form. This way, the damage he takes won't harm him, while still benefiting from the benefits of the transformation, making his next attacks even more powerful.

It has been shown that while the main power of this transformation is the ability to become stronger with each damage taken, the amount of damage taken can still become too much for him to handle. This can cause Vegeta to lose consciousness mid-fight, as was the case against both Granolah and Gas. However, when his durability is increased to the point where regular attacks no longer hurt him, the potential for Ultra Ego goes through the roof!

Defects in design

Ultra Ego is a shape that has a somewhat divisive design. While most fans of the series love the way Vegeta looks with his spikier hair, destructive aura, and overall fierce appearance, there are a few critics who feel that the look of the transformation leaves a lot to be desired. Some fans of the series feel that Vegeta's long-awaited foray into the realm of divine techniques in the form of a God of Destruction should have seemed more regal.

On the one hand, many people have the feeling that Vegeta simply looks strange because of his lack of eyebrows. Although this was likely a conscious decision, as he is portrayed as an extremely powerful and dangerous character who, like all Gods of Destruction, has the ability to destroy entire planets on a whim, some felt that he seemed far too animalistic. Additionally, many feel that the mold would have looked much better if Vegeta had kept his signature black hair instead of turning it purple.

Freaky Face Mode…?! It's called Ultra Ego, you fool!

Many fan art and theories express a desire for Vegeta's hair to grow as long as a Super Saiyan 3's, as a return to the form the prince never achieved. If there is indeed a mastered Ultra-Ego later on, the appearance of the transformation could be significantly different than what fans have seen so far, although they still have an amazing form now, putting Vegeta back in the discussion of the strongest Dragon Ball Characters!

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
